MISA denounces violation of the Rights of Information and Expression in the European Parliament

MISA denuncia violação dos Direitos de Informação e Expressão no Parlamento Europeu

In the European Parliament, MISA Mozambique denounced the growing violations of the rights to information and freedom of expression in Mozambique.

In his complaint, he highlighted the repression of journalists, censorship, digital blockades and attacks on the press during the post-election crisis.

During the session of the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), the Executive Director of MISA Mozambique warned of worsening restrictions on fundamental freedoms, including attacks on journalists, censorship against traditional media and the blocking of the internet as a strategy to control the flow of information about the demonstrations.

Nhanale pointed out that during the demonstrations, which lasted around three months, MISA recorded 19 cases of direct violence against journalists, including arbitrary arrests, physical attacks and, last January, an enforced disappearance, perpetrated by those involved in the demonstrations.

It also reported an increase in disinformation and hate speech in the digital space, which has led to digital violence, harassment and exposure of the private lives of some actors. Against this backdrop, MISA Mozambique calls for an independent investigation into the abuses committed during this period and advocates urgent institutional reforms to guarantee press freedom and the protection of journalists.

For their part, the DROI MEPs expressed their deep concern at the human rights violations in Mozambique during the crisis and urged the European Union to adopt a firmer stance in defending human rights, monitoring electoral processes, as well as mitigating the conflicts that recur every election cycle in the country.
