Maputo Will Have Intelligent Transportation System

The Metropolitan Region of Greater Maputo will soon have an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to improve service and mitigate congestion problems, especially during rush hours.

The project will emphasize information and communication technologies in order to contribute to the efficiency of transport in Greater Maputo, as well as a platform to provide bus routes.

The plan was presented last Wednesday (24), in the city of Maputo, and is the result of a Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) from South Korea, which will transfer the experience of this country to the Mozambican context.

According to "Notícias", the project's consultant, Han Yoo, recognizes the cultural and socio-economic distance between the two countries, which is why the study carried out in the country's capital takes these particularities into consideration.

"We can't copy everything, but there are many points that converge between the city of Maputo and some in South Korea, so we are convinced that, like there, it will also be successful here," Yoo said.

The vice-minister of Transport and Communications, Amilton Alissone said that the implementation of the project is part of the Government's commitment to find solutions to the transport problem, with the premise of facilitating the mobility of people and goods in a sustainable, intelligent, and dignified way.

The ruler also pointed to the expansion of urban centers and continued population growth as a reason for the government to redesign the area's objectives, looking to the needs of the future.

"In the Maputo metropolitan area alone, the population could reach six million by 2035, multiplying travel needs and consequently generating millions of daily trips," he said.

The leader also said that the region concentrates about 70 % of the country's vehicle fleet, which requires a great management effort. This mechanism, as he said, is not compatible with manual processes and demands an ICT-based management from the Government.

"The Government, recognizing the needs of the passenger transport sector, intends to continue to invest in sustainable means of transport that improve the mobility environment for people and goods through public and private entities that identify with the challenges of the 21st century."

At the moment, the initiative is in the study phase.
