Maputo: Government blames truck drivers for road degradation

Maputo: Governo atira a culpa para camionistas  pela degradação das estradas

The government is blaming truck drivers for the poor quality of the roads on most of the roads in Maputo province.

According to the government spokesman at the tenth session of the Provincial Executive Council, Ludgero Gemo, truckers disrespect the load restrictions, leaving the roads more precarious and in constant need of rehabilitation.

On the occasion, Gemo was quoted by Radio Mozambique as saying that the government is tightening controls on the movement of cargo trucks in order to reduce road maintenance costs.

The source, who was speaking during the tenth session of the Provincial Executive Council, warned that the government has observed damage on the main highways that could have been avoided by respecting the load limits already established.

However, he acknowledged the government's budgetary constraints in constantly intervening on roads that are already damaged to some degree.
