Violent demonstrations: Maputo City Council loses 6 garbage collection vehicles

Manifestações violentas: Conselho Municipal de Maputo perde 6 viaturas de recolha de lixo

Maputo City Council has lost a fleet of six garbage collection units due to the violent demonstrations taking place in the country.

Rasaque Manhique, chairman of the Maputo Municipal Council, said, as quoted by Rádio Moçambique, that the situation, combined with the destruction of containers, reduces the capacity for solid waste collection.

Manhique was speaking this Saturday during a clean-up day in the critical places where garbage accumulates, especially in the Polana Caniço neighborhood.

"You will understand that we are working here with private trucks, which people of good will were willing to support. You'll understand that on Monday the company's trucks were vandalized, six of them, and we're in this situation," he said.

Manhique urged the demonstrators and the population in general to allow garbage collection vehicles access to the dump sites.

For more than two months, the candidate in the last general elections has been calling for demonstrations in protest at the election results that gave victory to Frelimo and its candidate, Daniel Chapo.
