The Maputo City Council says that due to the violent demonstrations in October, November and December, the city's traffic light system suffered significant damage to its infrastructure.
According to the Maputo municipality's press release, 20 (30.3%) of the 64 intersections and traffic lights under the management of Maputo Municipality were inoperable.
The most damage occurred on Avenida de Moçambique (in its entirety), Avenida de Angola and Acordos de Lusaka (partially), where the following were vandalized, stolen and knocked down: 100 traffic light poles; 10 controllers (CPU); 141 lanterns; 2 solar panels; 2 batteries; 1,563 meters of power cable.
The Maputo City Council says that the situation has caused embarrassment and congestion, especially on the affected avenues.
It says in the note that MZNews had access to that the damage survey has already been completed and the replacement plan will be put in motion soon.
Faced with this scenario and taking into account possible future constraints, the city council is calling for strict observance of traffic rules, with special attention to unsignalized intersections.
