More than 170 roads, including national, regional and unclassified, could soon become impassable if the forecasts for rain this season are confirmed, according to Notícias online.
A contingency plan from the National Roads Administration (ANE) stresses that, due to the threat of flooding and damage, preventive measures may be taken on some arteries, including a ban on vehicle traffic.
The plan, which is quoted by Notícias, indicates that Sofala province has 32 roads at risk, including the N283, Marromeu/Caia and Caia-Sena/Chemba. The damage includes overtopping, cutting and erosion of the platform.
Nampula has 31 roads listed, most notably the N104, between Monapo and Ilha de Moçambique, and the N340, Moma/Mecane. Here, the platform is expected to be degraded and cut off, with eight roads with no alternative, focusing on Liupo/Angoche and Liupo/ Quinga.
In Zambezia, 27 roads are expected to be affected or interrupted, including Maganja da Costa/Mocubela and Magiga/Ligonha River, on the N324, with the destruction of the metal bridge, overtopping and cutting.
