Lutero Simango, president of the MDM, is the candidate chosen by the party to run for the Presidency of the Republic in the next general elections on October 9.
Simango was proposed by the Political Commission and the proposal was accepted by the governing bodies and the members of the National Council, according to "O País".
In his first speech as the party's candidate, Simango said that running for president "is a collective responsibility of his party and all Mozambicans".
Also quoted by the newspaper, Simango said that the MDM members' confidence in him gives him "more strength and confidence to serve the party and go into the elections with clear policies to bring back the hope of Mozambicans, with clear proposals for reforms and policies that can raise the spirits of society.
"We want an ethical, dialoguing, inclusive, tolerant and above all patriotic society. We believe that with these ideas we will have a robust economy and put an end to the illegal exploitation of our resources," he said.
Albano Carige, mayor of Beira, a name also proposed by the Political Commission, withdrew his candidacy, claiming that his commitment at the moment is to the people of Beira.
