Judge-Counselor of the CC gratified with the portfolio of the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs

Juiz-conselheiro do CC gratificado com a pasta do Ministério da Justiça, Assuntos Constitucionais e Religiosos

The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, has just appointed Mateus da Cecilia Feniasse Saize as Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs.

Mateus Saize is one of the judges-consellors of the Constitutional Council (CC) appointed by the Frelimo party who signed the ruling validating the election results that confirmed Daniel Chapo as President of the Republic, amid evidence of fraud.

After the results of the October 9, 2024 elections were announced by the CC, the country sank into a political and social crisis that led to the deaths of some 316 citizens, according to the Decide Electoral Platform.

Mateus Saize had been a member of the CC's advisory panel since September 2014, and now, after the most contested electoral process in the country's history, he is set to head the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs.

Against the Law of Public Probity

The judge-counselor, newly appointed Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, held several positions at the same time that put him at odds with the Public Probability Law.

He was a lawyer at Banco de Moçambique, assigned to the Central Regional Branch, and was appointed at a time when he was President of the Beira Municipal Assembly on the Frelimo side.
