GCCC recuperou dois mil milhões de Meticais em dez anos

In ten years, the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC) has recovered more than two billion Meticais, as a result of 11,030 corruption cases brought against it.

The information was revealed yesterday by the deputy director of the GCCC, Eduardo Sumana, during the national meeting of the central offices for combating corruption, organized and transnational crime and asset recovery.

The source also says that the institution performed to the tune of 94% in terms of its activities.

"In the procedural field, 11,030 cases were processed during the period in question, of which 10,403 were closed, corresponding to a performance of 94%. In connection with these cases, during the investigation, we managed to seize 2,905,259,882.24 MT (two billion, nine hundred and five million, two hundred and fifty-nine thousand, eight hundred and eighty-two Meticais and twenty-four cents), as well as 56 properties and 83 vehicles as proceeds and/or advantages of the illicit activities investigated," he said, quoted by the newspaper "O País".

For her part, the director of the Central Asset Recovery Office, Ana Sheila Marrengula, stressed that, "as the Asset Recovery Office, we will fight organized crime arduously and relentlessly, taking back from criminals the illicitly acquired assets as well as the funds that have illegally left the public coffers and the legal sphere of citizens. We will not back down from this goal, we will not give up and we will not give in."

The director of the Central Office for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime, Américo Letela, stressed the need to provide the institution with technical and technological equipment to match the sophisticated methods used by criminals.

"Despite the fact that this is a newly created body, with some limitations in terms of material resources, especially those of a technological and other nature, judging by the results achieved, we are expecting this office to act efficiently in preventing and combating organized and transnational crime in the near future."

It should be noted that on June 20th, the GCCC celebrates its 20th anniversary.
