The Frelimo parliamentary caucus considered the meeting held on Sunday night between the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, and former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane to be historic.
"After months marked by unrest, acts of vandalism, destruction of public and private property, and restrictions on the free movement of innocent citizens, this meeting will restore Mozambicans' faith in the power of dialogue, reconciliation and commitment to peace," says the press release from Frelimo's parliamentary caucus.
"This symbolic and deeply necessary moment, awaited with hope and anxiety by more than 30 million Mozambicans, represents a turning of the page and a firm step towards stability, unity and progress," reads the note.
"Mozambique deserves peace. Mozambique demands understanding. FRELIMO longs for a future where everyone, regardless of their differences, can contribute to the common good."
The document also states that Daniel Chapo has calmly and firmly reiterated his total openness to inclusive and constructive dialogue, as the cornerstone of participatory and development-oriented governance.
"The gesture of the meeting between the two leaders, which took place at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Centre, symbolizes a victory for the people, political maturity and patriotic responsibility."
In the note, the Frelimo parliamentary caucus encourages the two leaders and other political players to always prioritize the path of dialogue, reconciliation and mutual understanding, because only then will Mozambique be able to flourish in peace; only then will Mozambicans be able to work, produce and live with dignity; only then will we be able to continue to consolidate our young democracy and build the prosperous country that everyone aspires to.
The Frelimo parliamentary group ends by calling for "this meeting to inspire other noble and patriotic gestures at all levels of our society",
