FIFA and UEFA announced the suspension of Russian national teams and all soccer teams from their leagues, including the World Cup, this Monday (28) due to the attacks on Ukraine. The suspension is to prevail "until further notice."
The "king" sports bodies had issued a joint statement saying that the Russian "teams and clubs" will be "suspended from participation in competitions until further notice.
In addition, UEFA announced the termination of its contract with Gazprom, Russia's state-owned gas company, one of the body's biggest sponsors and the main funder of the Champions League.
In a brief note, UEFA said that the termination of the contract is immediate. The agreements relating to the Champions League and Euro-2024 thus become void.
Russia had planned to play a kind of "final four" for access to the 2022 World Cup against Poland (March 24) and, if it wins, it will fight for a place in the tournament in Qatar with the winner between Sweden and Czechia.
All three teams had already expressed their unwillingness to play Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine.
Russia's largest natural gas company became, in 2012, one of the main sponsors of UEFA. Between 2015 and 2018 it was also associated with FIFA, due to the World Cup-2018, which was held in Russia. In sports terms it is also the owner of Zenit St. Petersburg and main sponsor of Red Star (Serbia) and, until a few days ago, Schalke (Germany).
