The Armed Forces of Mozambique (FADM) have confirmed that one of their armored cars ran over a 26-year-old woman yesterday morning in Maputo City.
In a press release, the FADM said it was sorry for what had happened and "took full responsibility for the victim's medical and psycho-social care".
The victim was run over on Avenida 25 de Setembro during yesterday's demonstrations against the October 9 election results.
The Armed Forces say that the vehicle was on a "mission to protect essential economic objects, clean up and unblock roads as part of the post-election demonstrations and was part of a duly marked military column".
"The FADM calls on the population to meticulously observe safety measures regarding respect for the highway code and the priority of duly marked military vehicles in transit on public roads," the statement reads.
In the document, the military reaffirms its commitment to being a credible force for Mozambicans and that it is committed to observing the most basic standards of humanitarian law and human rights.
