Cooking gas factory completed this year

Fábrica de gás de cozinha concluída este ano

South African petrochemical company Sasol's cooking gas production plant in Temane, in the Inhassoro district of Inhambane province, will be completed by September this year.

The guarantee of the start of operations was given on Friday in Maputo by Sasol's director of corporate relations, Mateus Mosse, at a press briefing, according to "Notícias".

According to the source, the project is 80% complete and will start operating this year. "The completion of the plant has been delayed. The start of operations was scheduled for the last quarter of last year, but we were forced to interrupt the work due to the post-election demonstrations that began in October 2024," he explained during the briefing.

Once the infrastructure is completed in September, the petrochemical company is expected to be able to start producing 30,000 tons of cooking gas a year between November and December, which will supply 70% of the national market's needs.

"In addition to the domestic gas refinery, the resources produced will also be used to produce light oil and supply the Temane Thermal Power Plant with natural gas, which is expected to generate 450 megawatts," he concluded.

It should be noted that the materialization of this project is the result of a production sharing agreement, which provides for the construction of an infrastructure to produce cooking gas and 23 million gigajoules per year to feed the Temane Thermal Power Station.

The construction of the infrastructure through which Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or cooking gas will be produced involves several companies, some of which are national.

They benefited from 600 million US dollars, 72 million of which went exclusively to companies owned by Mozambicans.
