US urges Americans to leave Ukraine over fears of Russian bombing of Kiev

The United States of America (USA) today urged American citizens to leave Ukraine as it predicts a Russian attack on the capital Kiev in the coming days.

Russia is reportedly preparing an attack on civilian citizens, as well as state and non-governmental institutions, when there is only one day left of the six-month war.

"The State Department has information that Russia is intensifying efforts to launch attacks against Ukraine's civilian infrastructure and government facilities in the coming days," the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine claimed.

However, the American embassy warns that they should only leave the country if it is safe to do so, according to Reuters.

The warning followed a ban by the Ukrainian government on celebrations in the capital Kyiv (Kiev) on Wednesday (tomorrow) of the 31st anniversary of Ukraine's independence from Soviet rule due to fears of attack.

On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy also said that Moscow might try "something particularly ugly" in the run-up to Wednesday's anniversary.

Authorities have told Ukrainians across the country to work from home whenever possible from Tuesday to Thursday, also urging people to take warnings of air strikes seriously and to seek shelter when sirens sound.

The Kyiv city administration has banned large public gatherings until Thursday, fearing that a crowd of celebrating residents could become the target of a Russian missile attack.
