Basic Education: More than 50 schools may be upgraded

The Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) is mapping more than 50 elementary school to be upgraded to accommodate the secondary level, starting next year, under the National Education System (SNE) Law.

The SNE Law, approved by Law n.o 18/2018, of December 28, calls for compulsory basic education to become nine classes, compared to seven in the previous decree, approved in 1992.

The requalification of schools takes place in a context where there is a shortage of secondary education institutions, with a greater focus on the more remote areas.

The sector is also identifying elementary school teachers with higher education degrees in specialized fields to start teaching in secondary schools.
