Education with a deficit of 12,000 teachers by 2025

Educação com défice de 12 mil professores para 2025

The education sector has a shortfall of 12,000 teachers who should be hired to teach in the country's primary and secondary schools as of Friday (31), the start date of the 2025 school year.

The information was provided by the spokesperson for the Council of Ministers, Inocêncio Impissa, who was speaking to the press minutes after the end of the 2nd ordinary session yesterday in Maputo.

In addition to admitting new teachers who will not meet the deficit, Impissa said that there is therefore a need to reinforce and overload some, which could exacerbate the overtime challenge.

"That's why we often have the problem of overtime, which is set up to cover a little of the deficit we have in terms of teachers," he said, quoted by AIM.

The spokesman said that there is still no exact number of teachers to be hired for the 2025 school year, because the governance documents have not yet been approved by Parliament.

It should be noted that the teaching and learning system at national level is currently staffed by around 160,000 teachers.
