Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), announced, this Monday, the signing of a new memorandum with Empresa de Electricidade eSwatini (EEC) for the supply of power to the Kingdom of eSwatini.
The document states that the contract has a 17-month term, provides for EDM to supply 20 megawatts of power, a quantity that can be revised depending on the needs of its counter-party.
"The bilateral relationship between EDM and EEC is more than a decade old, with Mozambique and South Africa being the main suppliers of energy that that country imports to meet more than 70 percent of its domestic consumption needs," it reads.
At the time of the contract signing, the parties reviewed future joint projects, particularly the Temane Thermal Power Plant, which is being built in southern Mozambique.
"The Temane Thermal Power Plant project includes a transmission line between Vilanculos [Inhambane province] and Maputo, which will interconnect to the Motraco system, the same one that makes the interconnection between Mozambique and the eSwatini Kingdom," said EDM president Marcelino Alberto.
In December, the Globeleq company, the main shareholder of the Temane Thermal Power Plant, announced that it had secured full financing for the project, worth $652 million, and that it hoped to start producing electricity in 2024.
