The leader of South Korea's ruling party announced his resignation today, two days after parliament passed a motion to remove President Yoon Suk-yeol from office.
"I am resigning as leader of the People's Power Party (PPP)," Han Dong-hoon said at a televised press conference, adding that he was "sincerely apologizing to all those who suffered under martial law," as quoted by the international press.
This morning (local time), South Korea's Constitutional Court began a first meeting to discuss the timetable for Yoon Suk-yeol's removal from office.
On Saturday night, the deputies passed a motion of impeachment against Yoon, who has since been suspended, sanctioning the brief imposition of martial law on the night of December 3 to 4.
The former attorney general surprised the country by declaring a state of emergency and sending the army into parliament in an attempt to muzzle it, only to back down six hours later under pressure from the National Assembly and protesters.
The Constitutional Court has around six months to rule on the validity of the motion to dismiss.
