These are two randomized clinical trials, one of which began in January, on the development of techniques for discovering precancerous lesions, especially in women with a change in the screening test previously carried out in a peripheral health unit.
The second study, which began in April, focuses on the best treatment for women with HIV who also have precancerous lesions, according to the "Notícias" publication.
The data is presented by the Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), in connection with "Pink October", the month of awareness for the prevention and cure of cancers that affect women.
The research is taking place within the framework of the "Advance Consortium" project implemented by the HCM Training and Research Center, the University of Texas and Rice University, the latter two in the United States.
As part of this work, 52 samples of patients from the province and city of Maputo, aged between 30 and 49, were tested, the results of which will be presented later.
The project is comprehensive because it includes patients without a lesion, with low and high-level precancerous lesions, and with a confirmed cancer diagnosis, the latter of whom are sent to gynecological oncology for immediate treatment.
In addition to the benefits that this research will bring to patients, it will also be an asset to local training programs.
Every year, the country diagnoses an average of 26,000 new cases of cancer, a figure that may be associated with the increase in the number of health facilities with screening capacity.
As part of the National Cancer Control Plan 2019-2029, the country is committed to expanding the number of hospitals screening for the disease, providing diagnostic material and medicines. (News)
