China closes 21,000 accounts and detains 620 people to curb online rumors

Since April, China has shut down more than 21,000 social media accounts and detained 620 people as part of a campaign to stop the spread of rumors on the Internet, reports Notícias ao Minuto quoting the official Xinhua news agency.

More than 2,300 cases were investigated and more than 705,000 false reports deleted from social platforms during the 100-day campaign, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security said on Friday, according to Xinhua.

According to the source, more than 620 suspects involved in more than 130 cases have been arrested, according to the government department, which stressed that the initiative was intended to promote a healthy environment in cyberspace.

China is the country with the most Internet users in the world, although it exercises strong control over content. Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are some of the services that have been blocked in the country for several years.
