Chapo urges new leadership of the Public Prosecutor's Office to strengthen fight against corruption

The President of the Republic and the nation's highest magistrate, Daniel Chapo, today recommended to the new leaders of the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) an unwavering commitment to justice and integrity, emphasizing the need to strengthen the fight against corruption and other crimes affecting the country.

The statesman was speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the Deputy Attorney General, Irene da Oração Afonso Micas e Uthui, and the Deputy Attorneys General, Mário Ernesto Sevene, Firmino Emílio and Eduardo Leovigildo André Barros Sumana.

In his speech, Daniel Chapo emphasized that the appointments were recognition of the professional merit of those in office, stressing that "the choice of each of you reflects not only your competence, responsibility and experience, but also your demonstrated commitment to the values that underpin our democracy and the Mozambican rule of law".

The statesman emphasized that the prevention and fight against corruption are his government's priorities for the five-year period 2025-2029, and that the program in this regard will soon be submitted to Parliament.

The government plan includes measures such as strengthening protection for whistleblowers, greater control of financial transactions and modernization of the justice administration system.

The President of the Republic also pointed out that, with the implementation of the proposed strategies, it is expected that the rate of prosecution of corruption cases will rise from 72 percent to 81 percent and that the implementation of the Strategy to Prevent and Combat Corruption in Public Administration will rise from 25 percent to 75 percent over the next five years. "For us to succeed in this endeavor, the commitment of each and every one of you is indispensable," said the Head of State.

In his speech, the governor warned of the growing challenges of crime in the country, including terrorism, international drug trafficking, kidnappings and cybercrime, which require an innovative and coordinated response from the Public Prosecutor's Office. He stressed that the creation of the Central Offices for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime and Asset Recovery, as well as the expansion of the Anti-Corruption Offices, are measures that will strengthen the institution's response capacity.

Addressing the new Deputy Attorney General, Irene da Oração Afonso Micas e Uthui, the President of the Republic highlighted the historic nature of her appointment, as she is the first woman to take up the post. "This is recognition of an unblemished professional career that offers sufficient guarantees of the full performance of the duties she has just assumed," he said.

To the Deputy Attorneys General, Mário Ernesto Sevene, Firmino Emílio and Eduardo Leovigildo André Barros Sumana, the statesman expressed confidence that they would contribute significantly to the growth and efficiency of the institution, praising their technical legal qualities and experience.

In his final message, President Daniel Chapo urged those taking office to act with integrity and impartiality, reminding them that "the role of the Public Prosecutor is one of the essentials in the Administration of Justice System" and that they are expected to be courageous, responsible and empathetic when applying the law. He also reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the modernization of the judicial system and international cooperation in the fight against organized and transnational crime.

"Let's work together for a future where justice prevails, thus strengthening the pillars of our society," concluded the President of the Republic.
