A report by the Mozambican Network of Human Rights Defenders (RMDDH) released recently in Pemba, capital of Cabo Delgado, reveals that humanist activists in the province suffer threats and intimidation.
The report, called Community Voices, highlights that there are basic citizens' rights that are still not guaranteed for those fleeing attacks and counterattacks in the north of the country.
According to the Director of the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD), Network member Adriano Nuvunga, says that at the community level there are situations of human rights violations.
For the CDD there are also cases of denial of the realization of human rights by the conflict situation, aggravating the situation of poverty in which people affected by armed conflicts live
"Men and women who work so that other people can realize their rights, are being threatened by the varied situations, including the way the law and order authorities act in the regions affected by the conflict," Nuvunga denounced.
The President of the Mozambican Human Rights Commission (CNDH), Luís Bitone, also confirms the occurrence of intimidation. In his perspective "we need very energetic actions, with a view to making human rights a reality.
According to Bitone, one of the problems is that several actors "still don't understand the dimension of human rights, as that dimension that needs to be respected by everyone."
