A total of 32 high-caliber firearms were seized at the Ressano Garcia border crossing in Maputo, and were supposedly imported by a private security company, but it was determined that they were destined to strengthen terrorists in Cabo Delgado.
Quoted by Miramar, a representative of the private security company confirmed that the weapons were destined for Cabo Delgado, but to equip another security company with which it had a contract.
The weapons in question are prohibited in Mozambique because they carry a caliber larger than the AKM-47 assault rifle used by the Police of the Republic of Mozambique and the Defense and Security Forces.
The company claims that the arsenal is legal and that there is an alleged misinterpretation of the law, but the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) advanced that the argument does not work, since the transport of this type of war material is the exclusive competence of the Ministry of National Defense, hence the goods were seized and proceedings were initiated for the arrest of those involved.
For now, four people in connection with the case, including the driver of the car that transported the weapons, the customs broker who handled the clearance, and the representative of the company that imported the weapons, are in SERNIC custody.
