Angola. UNITA calls for citizenship demonstration for September 24th

Angola. UNITA convoca manifestação pela cidadania para 24 de Setembro

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) called, for September 24, a demonstration for citizenship and the consolidation of the democratic rule of law, in view of the worrying finding of "a regression of the democratic framework" in the country.

The decision was approved, this Wednesday, in an extraordinary session of the meeting of the Permanent Committee of UNITA's Political Commission, led by the party's president, Adalberto da Costa Júnior, according to a statement of that organ of Angola's largest opposition party.

"The Standing Committee notes with concern that, despite the CNE and the Constitutional Court having awarded victory to the party of the regime, the country has experienced in recent days, a worrying regression of the democratic framework with the restriction of freedoms, threats to the physical integrity of activists and political leaders, as well as members of civil society who have their own opinion," it criticizes in the statement.

The Standing Committee also points out the dismissal of employees and forced transfers, in addition to censorship of the state media, to which is "coupled with the display of military hardware and the troops of the defense and security forces in a clear intimidation against those who want to speak out against the current state of the country.

UNITA reiterates, finally, the will to "enforce the rights of citizens and in respect to those who placed their trust in it at the ballot box. (Lusa)
