The Mozambican Bakers Association (AMOPAO) fears that the armed conflict between the two largest wheat producers, Russia and Ukraine.

"If the war continues we fear there will be a lack of wheat in Mozambique and, consequently, a lack of bread," said the president of that association.

Although the war is not yet impacting the production of bread in the country, said the official that the rise in bread prices in the cities of Maputo and Matola have to do with the cuts in discounts for retailers, all because the production costs have worsened.

"The bakers have taken away the discounts to retailers. Production costs have gone up," he said.

Since the end of last year, the mogareiras have been increasing the price of wheat. Consequently, the price of a 200-gram loaf of bread, which used to cost 8.00 meticais, now costs about 12.00 meticais.
