GLOBELEQ, one of the largest investors in Mozambique's energy production sector, has missed the start of construction of the 120 megawatt Namaacha wind farm scheduled for the second half of this year.
The reasons behind the failure to meet the deadline are not yet known, much less the forecast of new dates for the start of work on a project that is the result of a partnership between this entity and the Mozambican government, according to AIM.
The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and the UK High Commissioner in Maputo, during the Mozambique Energy and Mining Exhibition Conference, gave assurances that work would begin in May of this year.
The only stalemate at the time was that the project was dependent on final details being completed.
The plant, budgeted at 270 million US dollars, will increase the amount of energy exported by the company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), benefiting from higher energy sales prices in the region and supply from the domestic market, which has been growing in recent years.
Of the overall investment, 230 million USD will go towards the construction of the power generation plant and the remaining amount will be invested in the construction of a 40-kilometer transmission line linking the districts of Namaacha and Boane.
The Boane substation connects the export corridors in the EDM region.
As recently as this year, Samir Salé, GLOBELEQ's Director of Development and Business, had assured us that the project was in its final stages and that all indications were that construction could begin between the second and third quarter of this year. However, sources linked to the company assure that the start-up has failed. (AIM)
