After more than two months of war between Israel and the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah, the Israeli security department on Tuesday approved a 60-day ceasefire, according to the international press.
Despite having accepted the ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warns of possible retaliation if Hezbollah violates it.
"The duration of the ceasefire depends on what happens in Lebanon. In full understanding with the US, we maintain full freedom of military action. If Hezbollah violates the agreement and tries to arm itself, we will attack. We will respond strongly to any violation of it," said Benjamin Netanyahu.
The cessation of hostilities in Lebanon is confirmed by US President Joe Biden, for whom peace between Israel and Lebanon cannot be achieved on the battlefield.
"Lasting security for the people of Israel and Lebanon cannot be achieved on the battlefield alone, which is why I have directed my team to work with the governments of Israel and Lebanon to forge a ceasefire to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah," Biden explained.
US President Joe Biden also said that it would no longer be allowed to threaten Israel's security.
"It will not be allowed to threaten Israel's security again. In the next 60 days, the Lebanese army and state security forces have positioned themselves and taken control of their own territory once again."
The agreement between the parties was brokered by the United States and France, and involves the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon.
