Acidente de viação na Manhiça faz 5 mortos e 14 feridos

Five people died and 14 others were injured, 11 seriously and three lightly, as a result of an accident that occurred this morning, on EN1, in the neighborhood 3 de Fevereiro, in Manhiça district, Maputo province.

The accident involved three vehicles, a passenger transport 'Toyota Quantum' that left Inhambane and was heading to South Africa, a truck and a private vehicle, according to STV. RM, said today that it was a head-on collision between two vehicles, and that the passenger transport was going the direction Manhiça-Maputo, and a truck that was going the opposite direction.

The accident allegedly occurred due to poor visibility caused by smoke from burning grass on the sides of the EN1 and by irregular overtaking, according to police spokesman in the Manhiça district command, Ibrahimo António.

"The Toyota Hiace truck was traveling in the direction of Palmeira towards Xinavane. On that descent on February 3, [the driver] saw smoke from arson and in front of him was a Toyota Fortuner car. [He slowed down to give priority to the smoke [to reduce the poor visibility], and simply [the driver of the truck] understood that he had to overtake. [The truck collided with the front part of another Toyota Quantum, one of those that go to South Africa, which was coming from the direction of Xinavane towards Palmeira," said Ibrahimo António.

The spokesman also said that the crash was violent and there was crashing and overturning of the vehicles into the farmland area. "The accident culminated in a high death toll, five, [at the scene]."

The injured in the accident were taken to Manhiça District Hospital where they are being observed.
