Over the next few days, the HGJM will carry out 50 surgeries on cataract patients living in the city and province of Maputo.
According to a report in Noticias, the surgical procedures are being carried out at the same time as a mini-campaign to screen for glaucoma, one of the main causes of irreversible blindness if not treated early.
Ophthalmologist Domingas Mavila guaranteed that there are enough medical and surgical equipment to operate on at least ten patients a day and that the activities will be run by three ophthalmologists.
"We're working with patients on the waiting list, most of whom are between 50 and 70 years old. They've been through the screening process and eye appointments. We have other elderly people waiting for an opportunity," explained the doctor quoted in the publication.
The source said that the post-election demonstrations had delayed the surgeries.
He indicated that the procedures are aimed at preventing blindness, recovering and/or improving the vision of patients suffering from eye diseases.
"Aware of the challenges posed by the existence of few professionals in the area, we invited a specialist doctor from Chimoio, in Manica, as well as resident ophthalmologists, which will serve to exchange techniques," he said.
