Maputo/Manifestations: More than 500 km of road damaged

Maputo/Manifestações: Danificados mais de 500 Kms de estrada

More than 500 kilometers of road in Maputo province have been damaged by the burning of tires during demonstrations in protest at the election results.

The provincial delegate of the National Roads Administration (ANE), Dado Novelo, was quoted by Rádio Moçambique as saying that the damage to the asphalt gradually creates craters that get bigger with the passage of time and the rain.

"What's happening is that the hauliers themselves are making the barricades and won't let us do the work, citing a lack of conditions on the road itself," he said.

The source asked for cooperation, which would not only be for the hauliers, but for all users of the road, because "we have unfortunately been witnessing the burning of tires, this is a critical situation because we are talking about a surfaced road and if we are going to burn tires over this road, this is a potential pothole".

The demonstrations began in October after the announcement of the election results by the National Electoral Commission and were called by politician Venâncio Mondlane in protest at the results.

Today they have other reasons, such as the high cost of living, social inequalities, lack of job opportunities, among others.
