Pope Francis, who is suffering from bilateral pneumonia, has a letter ready in which he resigns as leader of the Catholic Church if his health prevents him from remaining in the post.
The letter has been signed for around 10 years. The Pope himself confirmed the existence of the document in an interview with the Spanish newspaper ABC in 2022.
"I signed the resignation and told him, in case of medical impediment or something, here is my resignation. You have it," Francis told the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
That's why I'm telling you, so you know," he added. He said that he doesn't know what Parolin did with the document he signed.
The pontiff's health has become world news in recent days. The Pope has been in the Gemelli hospital in Rome since last Friday (14). Initially, Francis was diagnosed with bronchitis. Over the days, the case evolved into a polymicrobial infection.
