Mozambique wants to boost the Mozambique-Portugal Friendship League

Moçambique quer dinamizar a Liga de Amizade Moçambique-Portugal

The President of the Assembly of the Republic (AR), Margarida Talapa, wants to energize the Mozambican Parliament through cooperative relations with the Portuguese Parliament, especially through the "Parliamentary League of Friendship, Solidarity and Cooperation".

The parliamentary Friendship Leagues have not yet been created in the AR, because the X Legislature began in mid-January, with the investiture of the 250 members of the Mozambican parliament, an act that arose as a result of the VII legislative elections, which took place on October 9.

Margarida Talada said during her meeting with the Portuguese Ambassador to Mozambique, António Moura, that parliamentary cooperation must be translated into the implementation of the programs established between the two parliaments and states.

"I reiterate the thanks of the Mozambican people for the multifaceted support that Portugal has been channeling to the country, in the economic, political and social fields," said Talapa, quoted by AIM.

For his part, Moura envisages more technical and operational cooperation, especially in terms of assistance with legislative production.

He said that the success of the RA will mirror the growth of Mozambican democracy, and thus Mozambicans will be increasingly better served.

The Portuguese diplomat praised the meeting he had with Talapa, highlighting the bilateral and multilateral issues discussed.

"We addressed various matters of bilateral and multilateral interest, that is, in the relationship between Portugal and Mozambique, namely at the level of inter-parliamentary cooperation and also within the framework of various international organizations to which both Mozambique and Portugal belong," he said.

"We had the opportunity to analyze and take stock of what we've managed to do so far, and we also had some time to reflect on how to look to the future for the better functioning of parliament," he said.

Officialized in October 1996 with the signing of the interparliamentary cooperation protocol, cooperation between the Mozambican and Portuguese parliaments has an established duration of four years, which is automatically renewable.
