At least 825 people died last year on national roads as a result of road accidents, which represents an increase of 71 cases compared to 2023, when the authorities reported 754 losses.
Rocinda Uelemo, spokesperson for the Traffic Police (PT) at the General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), told "Notícias" that there had also been an increase in the number of accidents, from 668 in 2023 to 687 last year.
Serious injuries rose from 557 to 651, while light injuries rose from 840 to 1057, in addition to major and minor material damage to the vehicles involved in the accident.
Among the main types of accident were hit-and-run accidents, which fell from 280 to 248, although they continue to top the accident statistics.
The source also indicated that there had been an increase in collisions between cars and motorcycles, from 71 in 2023 to 100 last year. Crashes into fixed obstacles rose from 14 to 24 cases.
"Speeding, irregular overtaking, poor pedestrian crossing, mechanical deficiencies and drink-driving continue to be the main causes of accidents," the source explained, going on to stress the need to adopt more assertive measures to reverse the scenario. (News)
