Malawian oil companies have partially suspended fuel imports from the port of Beira in the face of the post-election demonstrations taking place in some parts of central Mozambique.
The situation has exacerbated the fuel crisis in the southern region of Malawi, especially in the city of Blantyre, which currently imports fuel from the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, a longer route than Beira, according to Radio Mozambique.
It should be noted that Malawi imports 50% of its fuel through Beira and 20% through Nacala, both in Mozambique, while Dar es Salam, in Tanzania, moves 30%, according to the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority.
Also according to the same source, with the violent demonstrations in some parts of central Mozambique, Malawi has started importing around 80% of fuel from Tanzania, which has exacerbated the shortage of this product in petrol stations.
The spokesman for the National Oil Company of Malawi, Raymond Likambale, said that in view of the post-election protests in Mozambique that have affected the transportation of fuel, the product will be transported from Tanzania until the situation of the demonstrations in Mozambique is normalized.
