Access Bank has established new partnerships with MEGA Distribuição de Moçambique, SA and the Lokal supermarket chain to strengthen its coffee capsule reuse project and reach more people.

With these collaborations, customers and the general public will have new collection points for used capsules, thus promoting more sustainable practices.

The expansion of the project includes the placement of collection points in Lokal stores in Dona Alice, Belo Horizonte, Feima, Vila Antúrio, Julius Nyerere and Triunfo.

These new partnerships complement the collection actions already underway at the Bank's five branches in Maputo and Matola, in collaboration with the company Reciclagem & Serviços Lda, which is responsible for collecting, processing the capsules and training the community in the process of transforming the dry waste.

The project to reuse coffee capsules is an innovative circular economy initiative. The capsules collected are sent to a cooperative in Bairro de Chiango, where they are separated and processed.

The capsules' aluminum and plastic containers are reused to create handicrafts and jewelry, providing a source of income for local artisans. In turn, coffee grounds are used as a natural fertilizer, benefiting urban agriculture and promoting more sustainable farming practices.

In addition, the project includes educational workshops in the communities, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of recycling and reusing waste. It is hoped that this approach will not only reduce the environmental impact of coffee waste, but also create economic opportunities for local residents by encouraging the training of artisans and farmers.

The project will benefit more than 5,000 people in the Chiango community in Maputo.
