IMF calls for strengthening aid to the most vulnerable countries

FMI pede fortalecimento do auxílio aos países mais vulneráveis

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, yesterday called on the international community to increase support for the most vulnerable countries and help nations deal with the burden of debt.

"I would like to make a double appeal on behalf of our most vulnerable members, help them deal with the debt burden, and secondly help ensure that the IMF continues to be in a position to support them," Georgieva said in her speech launching the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the Fund, which begin next week.

In her speech, the head of the Fund listed the measures the IMF has taken to help the most vulnerable countries, highlighting the 25 billion dollars, almost 23 billion euros, lent interest-free since the beginning of the pandemic:

"We are now making an urgent appeal to our wealthier member countries to make up the shortfall in funding for the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT)," set up to feed funding to the most vulnerable countries. (News)
