The Chinese government has disbursed $2 million to support children affected by Cyclone Idai, which struck central Mozambique in 2019, the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) said.
"The project was designed with the goal of increasing access to life-saving malaria prevention materials and medicines, including the use of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets to reduce morbidity and mortality, especially in children and pregnant women," indicates a UNICEF note, quoted by Lusa.
According to Unicef, the Chinese fund has so far served to purchase and distribute 250,000 mosquito nets, which have benefited 441,495 people, as well as obtaining tests and medicines, in an unadvanced number.
On the other hand, with the fund made available by China, at least 544,002 children had access to medical consultations, which aimed to reduce infant mortality.
Cyclone Idai hit central Mozambique in March 2019, causing more than 600 deaths and affecting more than 1.5 million people, with Sofala province severely affected.
About 90% of the city of Beira, the provincial capital of Sofala, was destroyed by the cyclone.
A few months later, in April of the same year, Mozambique was again affected by a cyclone (the Kenneth), which killed 45 people in the north of the country.
