The unemployment rate in Angola registered, in the second quarter of 2022, a slight decrease in homologous terms, to 30.2%, a decrease that was also observed in the population between 15 and 24 years old.
According to the employment survey by Angola's National Institute of Statistics, the unemployment rate in the population aged 15 or more was estimated at 30.2% between April and June 2022, 1.5 percentage points less than in the same period in 2021, corresponding to 46,682 fewer unemployed.
In quarterly terms, there was a decrease of 0.6 percentage points from the previous quarter (30.81Q2) and 82,511 fewer unemployed.
In the 15-24 age group, the unemployment rate rose to 56.71 QoQ, which compares to 57.71 QoQ in the same period and 57.21 QoQ in quarterly terms.
The unemployed youth population increased in this period by an additional 89,278 people, also reflecting the increase in the economically active population which increased by 4.8% compared to the second quarter of 2021.
There was also an increase of 160,000 employed young people between the ages of 15 and 24
The unemployment rate in the urban area (40.0%) is about three times higher than in the rural area (14.3%), with a difference of 25.7 percentage points.
In Angola, the majority of employed people are in informal employment (79.3%), of which 70.4% among men and 88.0% among women.
In Q2 2022, the majority of those employed in informal employment were self-employed (49.5%), family workers (29.8%) and workers for own consumption (12.2%).
The unemployed population aged 15 and over was estimated at 4.9 million people (3.1 million aged 15 to 24).
In Q2 2022, in the universe of the working-age population (people aged 15 and over), 11.3 million reported that they worked during the reference period in an employed or self-employed job or worked in a family business for at least one hour.
The economically active population aged 15 and over was estimated at 16.3 million people (7.9 million men and 8.3 million women).
The employment rate was estimated at 62.7%, being in the rural area significantly higher than the urban area (80.6% and 52.4%) with the employment rate for 15-24 year olds being 36.2%.
However, the data indicate that the 35-44 and 45-54 age groups concentrate the largest group of employed people.
More than half (53.2%) of the employed population is engaged in agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing, followed by wholesale and retail trade with 19.1%. (Lusa)
