The new road traffic cameras will allow the Traffic Police (PT) to detect multiple violations of the Highway Code, simultaneously.
PT started, this Thursday, the first tests of the new multi-functional devices that allow speed control, change of gear without signaling, driving without seat belt, use of telephone while driving.
With this material "it is possible to simultaneously read eight vehicles in parallel and eight in the longitudinal direction. The machine is capable of reading 64 cars at the same time, every second and in real time," explained João Ruas, President of the Administrative Council of the Municipal Mobility and Parking Company (EMME), quoted by STV.
"In the period of one hour, we controlled 705 vehicles, where we had 147 violations of the speed limit alone, with emphasis on three bus drivers, who were driving at 97, 90 and 101 km/h, respectively, and also, a private vehicle that was driving at 127km/h," said, António Machava, the spokesman of the brigade deployed to evaluate the equipment.
The police detected these irregularities on the EN4, in the section between Maquinag and the Maputo Toll.
The equipment is valued at $60,000, and in an initial phase the country may need up to four devices. If approved for use, these will be installed on National Road Number 4, National Road Number 1, the road to Ponta de Ouro, and one more to the Circular.
Even so, the siege will be tighter for the offenders because there are plans to install "undercover" vehicles, "with mobile cameras, which will register and identify all the infractions that are committed," as João Ruas revealed.
The machine is waterproof, can withstand high levels of heat, and even has a high-resolution camera, is self-contained, and the police can set up the equipment, leave, and later survey the violations committed.
