Covid-19 Outbreak Paralyzes iPhone Factory

Taiwanese giant Foxconn, a major supplier to Apple and maker of the iPhone, suspended activities this Monday at its largest technology center in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, according to a company statement.

According to the document, the suspension obeys "the new policy of the local government".

That Chinese city is home to two Foxconn stores and employs about 200,000 people. The company has not said how long operations will be suspended.

"Thanks to the diversification of our production hubs in China, we have adjusted the production line to minimize the potential impact," lusa advanced quoting a company spokesperson.

Workers at Foxconn's two factories in Shenzhen will be required to undergo covid-19 testing, along with other measures designed to try to prevent them from being infected.

The Taiwanese company has opened the world's largest iPhones factory in Zhengzhou, capital of the central Henan province.

The 17 million residents of Shenzhen, which links Hong Kong to southern China, were placed in lockdown on Sunday after 66 new cases of covid-19 were reported.

Although the number of covid-19 cases is low compared to other countries, China is facing its worst outbreak of the disease in two years.
