Russian bombardment burns ship with 600 tons of fuel

A February 25 Russian bombing raid is burning to this day a ship loaded with 600 tons of fuel in the "black sea," according to the latest estimates from the Planet Labs PC company.

The ship Millennial Spirit is still on fire off the coast of Odessa, and if left unattended, the vessel could be an environmental hazard for that sea.

Satellite images show the Moldovan vessel still on fire and exhibiting a long column of dense smoke. The ship's superstructure is seen engulfed in smoke, with a fire in the middle section of the ship.

In a statement, the geopolitical analysis firm, All Source Analysis, says that the sea could be contaminated with toxic products.

"If left unattended, the vessel could burn up and remain a floating hazard, or worse, break apart, sink and disperse toxic chemicals into the ocean," it says, acknowledging the possibility that "damage mitigation operations could be impeded" due to the conflict and tensions in Ukraine.

After the bombing, Moldova's naval agency reported that the crew of the Millennial Spirit was Russian and that two employees were seriously injured. The note from the agency, which conducted the operation to rescue the crew members, also said that the vessel was in "neutral waters" in the "black sea" and had been hit by a missile.
