Russian and Ukrainian diplomats meet Thursday in Turkey

A new round of negotiations between the foreign ministers of Russia, Sergei Lavrov, and Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, will take place in Turkey on Thursday, according to an announcement by the Turkish diplomatic office.

"On Thursday, March 10, we will have a three-way meeting, the Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers and myself," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavusoglu said in Ankara, stressing that the other two parties have requested his presence.

The meeting will take place as part of the Antalya diplomatic forum, which is being held this weekend in that southern Turkish city on the Mediterranean coast.

The Russian government, through Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, confirmed the meeting.

"A contact is planned on the sidelines of the diplomatic forum in Antalya between Russian Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba," Zakharova wrote on the social network Telegram.

Zakharova also said that the meeting will be held "in accordance with a telephone agreement" between the presidents of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The meeting has not yet been confirmed by the Ukrainian government, but a Foreign Ministry spokesman admitted that the issue is being examined and is still in the realm of "possibilities.

"The possibility of such a meeting is being evaluated," said Oleg Nikolenko.

This will be Lavrov's first departure from Russia since the February 24 invasion of Ukraine, which triggered numerous Western sanctions.

Turkey is a member of NATO and an ally of Ukraine, but it also has close ties with Russia and has been careful to maintain an open line with both capitals since the conflict began.
