Pandemic retracts 53% tourist arrivals in the country

About 958,000 tourists entered the country during the past year, a decrease by 53% when compared to 2019, when there were about 2 million visitors. At issue are the effects of the covid-19 pandemic, related to restrictive measures.

According to Cândido Langa, National Tourism Director, quoted by the newspaper "O País", despite the country's gradual relaxation of restrictive measures against covid-19, the improvement, in this sector also severely affected by the pandemic, is still premature.

"The tourism sector reviews the measures adopted by the Government. It, in itself, its normal course is to break any kind of protocol. So, it is fundamental to combine these two aspects".

About the tourism scenario in the coming months, Cândido Langa said that it may have a new look, but this depends on the improvement of the current health situation.

The covid-19 pandemic caused a 70% drop in revenues worldwide.
