Civil servants could go through 2024 without any kind of pay rise, due to the government's stance to curb civil service spending.
"We want to ensure the stabilization of the wage bill," said the Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, Amílcar Tivane, quoted by Lusa today.
He was speaking in Marrakech, Morocco, on the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
In the interview with Lusa, Tivane said that the adjustments made recently were substantial for "middle-income classes", in the hope that they would guarantee purchasing power. "We don't expect to see significant increases" this year.
It should be remembered that on July 14, 2023, the IMF said that the country should reduce its wage bill to ensure its fiscal sustainability.
According to the government official, "the decision on an increase can be made, but the increases must not deviate from what is the trajectory of the wage bill," which Mozambique wants to maintain at its current level.
