Mozambique and the EU strengthen cooperation on climate change

The Ministry of Land and Environment (MTA) is strengthening cooperation relations with partners working in the field of biodiversity conservation and climate change.

In this context, the Minister of Land and Environment, Ivete Maibaze, received a few days ago, in audience, the ambassadors of the European Union (EU) accredited in Mozambique, namely, António Sánchez, Gianni Bardini of Italy, David Izzo of France and Eeva Alarcon, head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Finland.

The meeting served to strengthen cooperation relations with the EU, at a time when preparations are underway for the XV Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, to take place in April in Kumming, China.

With regard to biodiversity and climate change, there was discussion about the need for the country to set goals that drive environmental preservation and to join global initiatives to conserve biological diversity.

Another approach that received attention in the meeting was about greenhouse gases, specifically methane, with the need to establish a permanent monitoring mechanism so that Mozambique can achieve concrete goals in the reduction of 30 percent of emissions by 2030.

The diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting the country in initiatives that contribute to the achievement of the 2030 sustainable development goals.
