General elections: STAE has registered more than 2.4 million voters in the first 15 days

Eleições gerais: STAE já recenseou mais de 2,4 milhões de eleitores nos primeiros 15 dias

In the first 15 days of voter registration, the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) registered more than 2.4 million voters across the country, an exercise that began on March 15.

The figure, according to STAE spokesperson Regina Matsinhe, represents 32% of the target of 7.7 million voters. All citizens aged 18 or over, or who turn 18 on October 9, the date of the vote in the 7th General Elections - Presidential and Legislative - and the 4th General Elections for Members of the Provincial Assemblies and the Provincial Governor, are eligible to vote.

Speaking during the Radio Mozambique program Linha Directa, Regina Matsinhe warned, however, that the data may contain slight inaccuracies due to difficulties in communicating with some STAE brigades in the provinces.

"Across the country, 2,463,857 voters have been registered, which corresponds to 32.88 percent of the estimated number of voters to be registered in this census and it should be noted that this number of registrations does not reflect the total number of voters registered up to this point because there are some communication difficulties with some brigades and this causes all kinds of delays in sending statistical data," the spokeswoman pointed out.

The source added that there are some limitations due to the terrorist attacks affecting some districts of Cabo Delgado province and the rains that have hit the southern region in particular over the last two weeks.

"We had problems like the storm and the rains that paralyzed some stations and in Cabo Delgado we have the issue of the ban on heavy vehicles and cargo on the Montepuez and Mueda road, as well as the impassability of the Macomia-Auasse road that connects the districts in the northern part of Cabo Delgado due to rising water levels," he said.
