General Police Command orders arrests and criminal proceedings against UIR officers

Comando-Geral da Polícia manda deter e instrui processos criminais contra agentes da UIR

The General Police Command ordered the immediate arrest and disciplinary and criminal proceedings against all the rapid intervention officers who consumed alcohol on duty and fired indiscriminately, injuring colleagues.

The behavior has been recorded in the positions of the Northern Operational Theater and the Rapid Intervention Subunits and the Ministry of the Interior classifies this instruction as blatant cases of alcohol consumption, according to the publication "O País".

According to the Interior Ministry document quoted by the newspaper, "these situations lead members to resort to the use of firearms and uncontrolled shooting, putting order, security and the proper fulfillment of the mission at risk".

The document also states that, as these are criminal and disciplinary offenses, the department has instructed the Intervention Unit's General Staff to take the following measures: Immediate arrest of members who deliberately fire on positions or injure colleagues; Opening of criminal and disciplinary proceedings; Withdrawal of uniforms and military equipment.

In extreme crises that go beyond provincial powers, agents should be sent to Maputo for treatment at the Infulene Psychiatric Hospital, the document said.

Meanwhile, the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Júlio Jane, has said that he will also be keeping a close eye on the situation in the armed forces.
