The National Investigation Service (SERNIC) arrested two Mozambican nationals on Tuesday (09) in the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado province, carrying 29 kg of ivory, two ends of which weighed 15 and 14 kg.
According to SERNIC spokeswoman Noémia João, who was speaking at a press conference yesterday, the arrest of the individuals was the result of intelligence work carried out by the corporation.
"The National Criminal Investigation Service in Cabo Delgado province became aware of the crime of felling and transporting forest and wildlife resources and the steps taken culminated in the neutralization of an individual accused of this crime and the subsequent seizure of two ivory tips weighing 29 kgm, one weighing 14 kg and the other 15 kg. In connection with the case, another accused is being held in the Palma district in connection with this type of crime," said the spokeswoman, quoted by Zumbo FM Notícias.
Noémia João, without clarifying where the animal was slaughtered, said that the ivory tips were being hidden in a house on the outskirts of the Ingonane neighborhood, ready to be sold.
