Mozambique is one of the countries in the world with the highest rates of sero prevalence and adolescents aged 15 lead the most infected age group.
The provinces of Zambézia, Nampula and Sofala have the highest number of people infected with HIV. Estimates indicate that in about a year there have been 10,000 infections.
"Mozambique has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world. Estimates also show a reduction in HIV mortality, new infections and vertical transmission as a result of the different interventions carried out to control the HIV epidemic," said the president of that office, Fernando Lavieque.
The information was revealed today in Parliament by the Parliamentary Office for the Prevention and Combat of HIV/AIDS regarding the study carried out between October 2022 and March 2023.
The work revealed that cultural practices discourage the use of methods to prevent and treat the disease.
Quoted by Rádio Moçambique, Lavieque said that the country was making progress in providing methods of preventing and treating the disease.
"There has been a notable increase in the number of health facilities with ART [Anti-Retroviral Treatment] services in Mozambique over the years 2003 to 2023, where coverage of these services rose from one percent to 96%," he said.
He also said that the evolutionary trend of new infections shows an upward trend until 2012 with a downward trend until 2022, "with around 54,000 new infections for women, 30,000 cases of new infections for men and 13,000 cases of new infections for children".
The information was approved via a draft resolution.
