On Thursday (25), the Center for Public Integrity (CIP) released a document which raises the suspicion that the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, negotiated the extension of the Port of Maputo concession during one of his trips to the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) between 2022 and 2023, and calls for an investigation.

According to the announcement, the main beneficiary of the Port of Maputo concessionaire is the royal family of the United Arab Emirates, which owns, through Dubai Ports World (DP World), 48.5% of the 51% owned by Portus Indico Sociedade de Serviços Portuários. joint Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC). The entry into the management of the Port of Maputo cost the Emiratis an investment of 32 million dollars. Read more here.
"DP World, MPDC's largest shareholder and leader of the private consortium that manages the port of Maputo, is owned by the royal family of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). DP World is a subsidiary of the prominent Dubai World, a holding company of the UAE government, established in March 2006," it reads.
Once, Nyusi (father) made two trips to the USA in less than three months.
The civil society organization recalls that on one of its trips.., Nyusi took his son Jacinto Ferrão Filipe Nyusi with himthe same as at the beginning of June 2021, marriedat the Mozambican Consulate in Dubai, and then held the "Copo d'água" in a luxury hotel, where the cheapest daily rate is around a thousand euros and a wedding party costs around 250 euros a head.
According to the newspaper EvidenceIn Dubai, Jacinto was introduced to high-ranking local figures, such as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed, and the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, among others. This "is interpreted as a blatant case of influence peddling", used by the Mozambican PR in order to extend "the family's business empire".
CIP is calling on the Public Prosecutor's Office to investigate Nyusi's trips to the United Arab Emirates because, at the end of his mandate and after consecutive trips to that country, his government decided to extend the concession period for the Port of Maputo by another 25 years, starting in 2033. But also, the investigation should extend to the Mozambican political elite with some involvement in this port business.
For the organization, the terms of the concession extension "should be considered suspicious".
